I have hesitated for months to share my thoughts here because I have struggled to put together what I consider the correct verbiage. To be perfectly honest there are no perfect words to describe my family’s experiences with Maria and Jakob other than to say we hit the architectural lottery.
My husband and I interviewed several local architects all who could have built our home. But, no one got us like Maria and Jakob. They understood our worldview, our interest in nature and our budget constraints. They are accessible, humorous with a relaxing manner, and obviously so intelligent and creative.
Maria and Jakob worked together with our builder to make the home building experience as smooth and painless as possible. We just cannot recommend them more. Like I mentioned, we truly hit the jackpot!

Working with Maria & Jakub has been a pleasure. They’ve listened carefully to how I will live in my home. To my rants and raves about my likes and dislikes. All with a smile and steady hand. They’ve taken my strong architectural views, combined them with their own aesthetic sensibilities to design a home that is more than I could have imagined.
Best of all, they are now friends, welcome at the dinner table in my new home. I could not have asked for more.
We were so happy with Maria and Jakub’s work designing our home. If you love their portfolio, you should know that in addition to bringing their design sense, they are also collaborative and good listeners. We had so many goals and ideas for our house, both functional and aesthetic. They were able to incorporate our wishes into a cohesive design that was much more than we could have imagined on our own.
Building a house is a huge investment of time, energy, and money. It was important to us to put in the design work up front to gain confidence that the finished home would be just right for our family. Rusafova Markulis did a wonderful job for us.
We were looking for a highly creative firm where we would not get lost in the shuffle. There are many larger firms but Rusafova Markulis are a small boutique firm that gives you the attention you need when designing a custom house. They listened to our needs and designed us a house that is an eye stopper.
I had a very specific aesthetic in mind for my new home and spent a few days reviewing the websites of architects in the area. Most designed very traditional homes that are common in N.C., but I wanted a contemporary design with a wall of glass to see the mountain views my lot provided. My family is from Germany, so I am very comfortable with European designs. When I saw the projects on Maria and Jakub’s website, I knew they were the architects for me.
Maria and Jakub are extremely practical and help set my expectations with respect to budget and design. I wanted many unique features that added up to a very expensive house. They were very patient helping me understand the options how they related to costs but staying as close as possible to my vision. Due to the extreme volatility in the economic climate Maria had requote the window package 3 or 4 times to find the right window brand to make the large-scale custom windows I was looking for.
Once the design was set, they recommended a few builders they have worked with since they had the ability to build a home with a lot of glass and steel in a mountain setting. I enjoyed the collaboration with Maria and Jakob and the builder I eventually selected.
My home is just starting to break ground and I am very excited to see the final result of Maria and Jakub’s work.
